What is a Mazagran?
The Mazagran is a tall, slender cup, often without a handle, whose cylindrical or slightly conical shape is designed for long coffees. Historically made of porcelain or earthenware, it is now reinterpreted in noble materials such as artisanal stoneware.
Its capacity, typically 12 to 20 cl, distinguishes it from a small espresso cup as well as a large mug. It occupies a unique place in tableware: neither too small, nor too large, always elegant.
The origin of the Mazagran: a story born in Algeria
The Mazagran owes its name to the city of Mazagran, in Algeria. In 1840, during the French military presence, soldiers are said to have consumed coffee diluted with water to better withstand the heat. This simple and refreshing drink gradually spread to France.
Upon their return to France, the soldiers popularized this "café mazagran" in Parisian cafés. The drink was served in a tall container which eventually bore the same name. The word thus passed from the drink to the object.
The Mazagran in French homes
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Mazagran became a fixture in French households. It could be found in family sideboards, brought out for Sunday meals, often adorned with floral motifs or gilded trim. With the rise of espresso machines and the popularization of the mug in the 20th century, the Mazagran gradually faded from tables.
